Many people are really surprised to learn that there are edible flowers. They are so beautiful and tasty that they are often times used in edible arrangements for special occasions or parties. There are many recipes that you can cook with flowers. Flowers can enhance the appearance of any serving dish as a garnish.
Many different varieties of fruits, herbs, vegetables, and assorted flowers can be used in meals. Just use a few in simple dishes to add flavoring and by all means make sure your choices are agreeable; no unpleasant taste or side effects.
Marigolds are also called calendula. Flavors range from tangy to peppery or spicy to bitter. A similar taste to that of saffron. Sprinkle flowers in salads, herb butters, rice or pasta dishes and soups.
Fuchsias have beautiful, graceful shaped blossoms that are perfect for garnish. Some say the blooms are slightly acidic in flavor. Garlic blossoms have a garlicky zing to them and are often used to add zip to salads. They have pretty flowers of pink or white. Basil flowers come in lavender, pale pink, or white, depending upon the variety. Flavor is similar to the leaves used in Italian cooking, but is not as strong. Great for garnish and in salads.
Dill flowers are tangy just like the leaves but an even stronger flavor. Use the flowers just as you would the herb for seasoning dips, salad dressings, seafood and soups. For all you gardeners, try growing your own. It grows really fast and attracts many different species of butterflies.
Lavender tastes sweet with a tinge of citrus flavor. They have beautiful blossoms, look great in champagne, and make a nice garnish for ice cream and chocolate cake. Why not try your hand at edible arrangements like crystallized candy or garnishing cheese platters with brightly colored edible flowers? Or you could add a touch of elegance to any meal or drinks served with flower ice cubes.
Edible flowers are often overlooked by many people but can add an exotic flair to any dish.
