Searching For A Cure For Constipation

Constipation is an uncomfortable and often times embarrassing ailment that almost every human will suffer through several times throughout his or her life time. It can easily be cured with the simple consumption of fiber, which is found in whole grain foods (cereal companies have been going crazy with it) and little snacks like berries or nuts.

Of course, sometimes the “problem” can be caused by something a little more than a diet gone awry. Sometimes medications like pain medications, anti depressants and even iron and calcium supplements can put a stop to ones usual bodily functions. If one experiences difficulties passing stool after beginning a medication, one should speak to their physician and ask if there is anything that could help with the constipation.

Now, if it still occurs and neither of these options have been an issue, it is possible one has not been drinking enough liquids. Drinking water and juices adds the necessary fluids to the colon to give stool its bulk and makes it softer, which makes it easier to pass. The recommended amount of water or liquid to be consumed is eight eight ounce glasses each day. It may sound like a lot in words, but eight ounces is only enough to fill a one cup measuring cup. So it really is not a very big deal.

Even a lack of exercise can be the cause of an uncomfortable trip to the bathroom. It is very common in the elderly, who cannot move as much as someone younger and sometimes can never even leave their beds. It is still uncertain as to why exactly a lack of physical activity can cause constipation, but many disgruntled nursing home residents and their attendants have been witness to these uneasy events. Using simple laxatives can be helpful, but it can be very dangerous if too much is used. Overuse of laxatives can cause stomach pains, nausea or vomiting and can severely change habits of the bowels. If any of these symptoms appear, seek medical help right away before things can get too far out of hand.

Constipation is an unfortunate reality that most people will realize at least a couple times during life and while it is embarrassing, it doesn’t mean the end of the world. All it means is one should take care of their diet a little more carefully and keep in touch with their doctor. It may also be a good idea to keep some laxative pills close, just in case of an emergency. Take a look at food to help constipation or how to prevent constipation.
