When you are doing a basement renovation one of the most difficult aspects is ensuring that you create a space which has enough light to make it a pleasure to use. This article will take a look at some of the things you can do to increase the amount of light available without spending a huge amount of cash.
1. If you are lucky enough to have windows then you should refrain from using any treatments that can prevent light from entering the space. You can find a coating that prevents people outside from looking in but allows light to enter without being hindered by blinds or curtains.
2. If you are worried about privacy then you can plant small bushes outside the available windows that will still allow light in. For windows that are situated in your garden there’s no need to do anything that will block some of the natural basement light.
3. A great idea that I use often id to place large mirrors opposite any windows that we have. These will reflect the little light available and double its effectiveness in brightening up your space. You have to use tricks like these if you prefer natural light, unless you are able to install some sort of skylight, or wall that has a degree of transparency.
4. Removing a section of wall to let in natural light is a good option if you don’t mind having a lot work done. Another option is to enlarge any windows that already exist, or simply changing the old wood frames with a newer aluminum which will increase that feel of light you are looking for.
5. If you are struggling to get as much natural light in as you need then a few tricks are in order. First, you could paint all surfaces a lighter color. If you currently have a dark carpet then changing that is an easy way to improve things, especially if you are willing to have tiles installed. Another thing is to use chrome, metal, and glass furnishings which will reflect light, rather then absorb it like wood has the ability to do.
