If you or a loved one enjoy smoking pot but have decided to give up the habit then it can be useful to be aware of the most common marijuana addiction withdrawal symptoms. The length of time required for the detoxification process will depend upon your own metabolism and past history of pot use. As a general rule the first few days after quitting are the hardest, though the uncomfortable feeling can last up to a fortnight or more.
Stopping smoking marijuana will produce both psychological and physical symptoms of withdrawal. One of the most common issues that arise from giving up pot is a feeling of restlessness and anxiety. Though hardly comparable to a panic attack, the anxiety that is felt can nevertheless have a dramatic impact on your outlook and state of mind.
It is natural that after quitting you will still get cravings to light up a joint. When this happens try to do an activity that will lighten your mood and make you forget about sparking up; for example go for a walk outdoors or watch a funny movie or TV show.
If you live with friends or family then if you feel comfortable doing so you should inform them of your decision to give up marijuana. They should then be able to offer you a form of emotional support that allows you to get through the first few dry weeks with greater ease. There will always be the temptation to smoke more regular cigarettes if you have no pot but this is not such a wise choice as nicotine is far more addictive and less pleasurable than THC.
Another major hurdle that would need to be overcome if you decide to give up smoking marijuana is insomnia. Cannabis is known to have muscle relaxant properties that allow for any pot smoker to be able to fall asleep with the minimal of effort.
After giving up there is every chance you will find it difficult getting to sleep, you are going to feel tired and irritable because of this. But do not worry, the insomnia will pass as your body returns to its natural balance. If lack of sleep is starting to cause you serious problems after giving up pot then look for healthy alternatives such as chamomile tea.
Then there is the issue of whiter teeth. Whitening teeth tips may be appropriate after successful withdrawal. Though this is probably something you will think about later, no need to stress yourself or your body over it at this point.
If you do manage to get to sleep then there is every chance that your dreams are going to be a lot more vivid and memorable than during your pot smoking days. It is not that uncommon to experience nightmares and cold sweats when sleeping. This is a normal part of the detox process and should not be too much of a cause for concern.
A loss of appetite is also a symptom of marijuana withdrawal. Every pot smoker knows that after a joint there are often cravings for sweet food. After you give up you will no longer get the urge to raid the fridge in search of munchies. It may happen that for the first few weeks your weight drops, but over time your appetite should return and your diet will be a lot healthier than in the past.
