In my line of work, I routinely meet people who are desperate to make extra money. Plus, they usually need this money pretty quick. For these types of people, affiliate marketing isn’t for you. You see, to truly build up a legitimate business using affiliate programs, takes a good while. And to be honest, your average Joe ‘I wanna be rich’ Schmoe doesn’t have the patience or will power to put forth the effort to see such a business through until it pays off.
When I got into affiliate marketing, it took my first website just a little over a year until it started making money. I worked on it on the side when I had time. My second site, which has turned out to be the one to make enough money I could quit my day job, took nearly two years to start making money with affiliate programs. So you see, it can be done but don’t expect it to happen overnight. Sure, some people get lucky and hit the ball out of the park the first time at bat, but they are not the norm!
Over the years I and others I know have tried nearly all the programs and systems on the market. Some worked a little while many were nothing more than scams. The websites that eventually really paid off for us were the ones that were about subjects we were really passionate about. You see, when you do something you truly love, you don’t consider it work. You enjoy it and you’ll do more of it. The more ‘work’ you do with it, the more attention you’ll get. Then one day you wake up and realize you have a large website that brings in lots of traffic about your subject. Usually the wake up call comes when someone wants to pay you a lot of money to advertise on your site!
It’s easier to get started today than any other point since the Internet began. A lot of hosting companies have programs such as WordPress where you can start your own blog. Plus many also have easy to use ‘what you see is what you get’ programs to build your own website. For as little as fifty bucks per year, you can have your very own hosting account and website. Starting a business doesn’t get much cheaper than that!
Once you have a website up and running, you’ll search out others in your niche. You’ll befriend them and eventually you may ask them to link to your site from theirs. This is called networking and link building. This is the two most important things you can do to get traffic once your website is built.
