Travelling with a Toddler

Traveling with a toddler can seem like a nightmarish proposition if you are not prepared. No matter whether you are flying, taking the bus, or simply going on a road trip, not providing children with proper amusement can mean more trouble for you, and less fun for your little one. Being properly prepared can mean the difference between a pleasant trip and one you regret. Before the trip explain to your child what is going to happen and maybe show them photos of a plane if you are flying and of your destination, but keep everything low-key and calm, the last thing you need is to travel with an over-excited child.

If you are flying, you may be wondering what you can do to keep children entertained on the flight, especially if it is a long one, but the real problem begins at check-in. Often there are long lines at the airport and asking your toddler to be still and be patient while you wait is never a good idea. If your child is receptive, play small visual games with him or her to keep them stimulated. Ask them to point out all the red suitcases they see, or how many men with a mustache are around. This sort of visual game is great to keep them aware of their surroundings and their minds off the long wait.

On the plane, have activities that you child can do. Coloring books and puzzles are a great way to keep toddlers occupied, but remember to encourage him or her to be quiet and respectful of other passengers. Pack a goody bag with small, healthy treats like raisins and dried apples, and be sure to have water or their favourite drink available to guard against dehydration. Include some some small toys or games wrapped as a surprise to be given out at intervals. Toddlers may experience some fear of flying, so remember to calm and reassure them that everything will be okay.

For ground travel on both buses and cars, you need to have the proper equipment for your child. Airlines are equipped to accommodate children and to some extent so are buses, but for rental cars and other vehicles, you will need to provide your own car seat. Children up to age five should always be strapped in and properly fitted to their seat. If you cannot carry a car seat with you, rent one from your car rental agency. They will be happy to accommodate you. Take some removable window shades with you as these will probably not be available from the rental agency. Plan your trip so journeys are not too long, even if this means breaking it up into more days and planning overnight stays where you can all relax, and build in frequent stops where your child can get out of the car and move around.

Above all, make sure your child is comfortable. Explain the method of travel and everything you will go through, such as security checks and baggage claims so that your child is not out of his or her element. Helping them understand everything that needs to be done while you travel will provide for a better experience for the both of you, meaning you arrive at your destination just as happy as you were when you began planning your vacation.

For ease of travelling you will probably want to take a lightweight, fold up buggy that can easily be stowed in a car boot or the aircraft hold. For some great deals in buggies and more articles on babies and toddlers visit pushchairs, prams and buggies and pliko pramettes
